AI for Main Street: Why Federal Action Should Accelerate Your Local Strategy
Most people assume Washington is incapable of agreeing on anything. That assumption is worth revisiting, at least for one thing. The AI for Main Street Act recently passed the House with one of the most lopsided bipartisan votes in recent memory. This 395 to 14 vote for AI implementation is a signal that artificial intelligence has crossed from buzzword territory into national infrastructure priority.
Update: 9 out of 20 available seats for our upcoming session have now been claimed. Secure one of the remaining spots at the AI Onramp in Carmel on April 23 to build your organization's AI foundation.
This shift is relevant for organizations in Monterey County. While most local teams have individuals using AI on their own, few are using it effectively and securely. It’s a local and national issue, which is why our legislators are working together as quickly as they can to fill the gap.
Local Traction and Practical Implementation
The most effective organizations in our region are already moving strategically. While most of our clients are in Silicon Valley, we recently held a successful workshop at the Sunset Center for the teams at Carmel Realty Company and Monterey Coast Realty. Later next month, we will also work with the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Monterey Bay Chapter. These leaders are defining how AI can enhance their operations while protecting the trust and data of their clients and donors.
When established, high-trust brands in our community begin integrating these tools, it serves as a practical proof of concept. The question for other local leaders is how quickly they can establish their own internal standards safely.
The Window Is Closing on "Wait and See"
The AI for Main Street Act directs Small Business Development Centers to begin providing guidance on AI operations, data protection, and cybersecurity. While this is meaningful, it is also a lagging indicator. When the federal government begins mandating AI literacy at the local level, the window for a "wait and see" approach is closing. The organizations waiting for that public signal have already fallen behind the ones that saw it coming.
The leaders moving effectively today are not waiting for the government to catch up. They are building internal frameworks now. They recognize that almost all teams are already using AI, but a few are moving strategically, defining how AI fits their values, securing their data, and putting these tools to work on the routine tasks that drain time from higher stakes work. These leaders will be the ones setting the standard when the rest of the market finally catches up.
From Curiosity to Action: The AI Onramp
To help local organizations make that move, GapJump AI is hosting a focused two hour working session for leaders ready to move safely. The AI Onramp provides professional strategy and security insights without requiring a large IT budget or technical background.
Participants will leave with three concrete deliverables:
A Custom AI Policy: A draft that defines human oversight and keeps technology aligned with your organizational values.
Data Security Protocols: Guidance on setting up enterprise-grade environments that protect sensitive information.
Operational Frameworks: Practical methods for applying AI to routine tasks, freeing your team for the work that actually requires human judgment.
